Personal Profile

Dr. Matsuno, born in 1967, received his B. Eng., M. Eng. and Ph. D. degrees in Chemical System Engineering from The University of Tokyo in 1990, 1993 and 1996, respectively.

From 1996 to 2004, he was a Senior Researcher at National Institute for Resources and Environment (NIRE), Ministry of International Trade & Industries (MITI).

From 2004 to 2016, he was an Associate Professor of Material Engineering at Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo

In 2016, he joined Chiba University as a Professor, Dept. of Urban Environment Systems, Graduate school of Engineering.

Major Research Field

Since 1996, he has been in involved in researches on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). He has conducted many LCA case studies for materials, energy systems, automobiles, recycling systems. He joined the University of Tokyo in 2001, then, he started to conduct researches on dynamic modeling of Material Flow Analysis (MFA) for base metals (steels, aluminum, copper, zinc, etc.), rare metals (dysprosium, indium, etc.) and precious metals on a global scale. He joined Chiba university in 2016 as a professor in Department of Urban Environment Systems, in which he has been conducted researches related to precious metal recovery from WEEEs, LCA, MFA etc.

Awards and Social Activities

He was awarded an encouragement prize from The Honda Memorial Foundation in 2008 for his activities related to "Sustainable management of materials". He was awarded Nishiyama Memorial Prize from The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan in 2008 for his activities related to "Sustainable management of steels". He also won a Best Paper Prize from Institute of LCA, Japan in 2010. He was the chair of 8th international conference on Ecobalance in 2008. He was the editor-in-chief of Journal of Life Cycle Assessment, Japan, and an associate editor of the Journal of Japan Institute of Metals, International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment. He is now one of the board members of Institute of LCA, Japan.
